What is Ruqyah?
A Prophetic means of healing
Ruqyah (رقية) is the recitation of Quran, the beautiful names of Allah and authentic supplications over a person, seeking cure and protection from Allah alone. The Prophet ﷺ performed ruqyah, received it, and permitted it, saying: “There is nothing wrong with ruqyah as long as it does not involve shirk.” (Sahih Muslim 2200)
Shar‘i ruqyah
Is made with the words of Allah, His names and attributes, or authentic duas; in Arabic or a clearly understood language; with the belief that it has no effect by itself — only by Allah’s decree.
Forbidden practices
Amulets (ta’wiz), unknown words or symbols, calling on jinn, fortune-telling, asking for your mother’s name to “diagnose”, animal sacrifice to other than Allah, or anything that contradicts tawhid.
For everyone
Ruqyah is not only for the afflicted. It is daily protection for you, your children and your home, and every Muslim can perform it on themselves without an intermediary.

Everything you need to practise ruqyah correctly
Use this guide for yourself and your family. Tap a section to jump to it.
1. Conditions of valid ruqyah
- It is with the Quran, Allah’s names and attributes, or authentic supplications.
- It is in Arabic or in words whose meaning is understood.
- Belief that ruqyah does not heal by itself; the cure is from Allah alone.
- Sincerity (ikhlas) and certainty (yaqin) that Allah is able to cure.
- Patience — keep going without demanding immediate results.
- Halal life — avoid sins, haram income and neglect of salah, which weaken protection.
2. Preparation
- Make wudu and sit in a clean, quiet place; face the qiblah if possible.
- Remove pictures of living beings and music from the room.
- Begin with istighfar, sincere repentance and salawat on the Prophet ﷺ.
- Recite slowly and with presence of heart; understanding the meaning increases its effect.
- Keep water and pure olive oil nearby to recite over (optional, described in step 6).
3. Core ruqyah verses
Surah Al-Fatiha (1:1–7) — “the ruqyah”
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds… Guide us to the straight path.
A companion recited Al-Fatiha over a man bitten by a scorpion and he recovered. The Prophet ﷺ said: “How did you know it is a ruqyah?” — Sahih al-Bukhari 5749
Ayat al-Kursi (2:255)
Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence…
Whoever recites it before sleeping, a guardian from Allah remains with him and no devil comes near him until morning. — Sahih al-Bukhari 2311
Last two verses of Al-Baqarah (2:285–286)
“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 5009, Muslim 807
Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq & An-Nas (Al-Mu‘awwidhat)

When the Prophet ﷺ was ill he would recite the Mu‘awwidhat over himself and blow (nafath). — Sahih al-Bukhari 5016. Recite each 3× morning and evening (Abu Dawud 5082).

5. Authentic Prophetic ruqyah duas
O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal, You are the Healer; there is no cure except Your cure, a cure that leaves no illness.
Al-Bukhari 5743, Muslim 2191
In the name of Allah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah heal you.
Jibril’s ruqyah — Sahih Muslim 2186
Place your hand on the place of pain. “I seek refuge in Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel and fear.”
Sahih Muslim 2202
I ask Allah the Mighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to cure you.
For visiting the sick — Abu Dawud 3106, At-Tirmidhi 2083
I seek protection for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature and every evil eye. (For children)
Sahih al-Bukhari 3371
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. (Evening ×3, and when stopping anywhere)
Sahih Muslim 2708, 2709
6. Step-by-step self-ruqyah
- Intention & tawakkul. Intend healing and protection from Allah alone, and begin with istighfar and salawat.
- Recite the core verses (section 3): Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, the end of Al-Baqarah, then Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas — each 3× if you can.
- Blow lightly (nafath) into your palms after reciting, and wipe over as much of your body as you can, starting with the head, face and front of the body (Al-Bukhari 5017).
- Add relevant verses from section 4 according to your situation, and the Prophetic duas from section 5.
- Water & oil (optional). Recite over water and drink/bathe with it, or over olive oil and apply it — practised by many scholars; never use water or oil from people who mix in unknown words.
- Make heartfelt dua in your own language; the times of acceptance (last third of the night, between adhan and iqamah, in sujud) are best.
- Be consistent. Repeat daily, ideally morning and evening, until you feel relief — and keep the daily adhkar afterwards.
7. Evil eye, sihr, jinn & waswasa
Evil eye (al-‘ayn)
“The evil eye is real.” (Muslim 2188). If the person who caused it is known, ask them to make wudu and pour the water over the affected person (Abu Dawud 3880, Ibn Majah 3509). When you admire something say “Ma sha’ Allah, la quwwata illa billah” or “Barakallahu fih”.
Sihr (black magic)
Recite the sihr verses (7:117–122, 10:79–82, 20:65–70) with Al-Fatiha and the Mu‘awwidhat. If a sihr object is found, recite over it and destroy it. Never go to a magician to undo magic — the cure is with Allah.
Jinn & devils
Maintain the five prayers, Ayat al-Kursi, Surah Al-Baqarah in the home and the adhkar. Recite with confidence; do not converse with or seek information from jinn.
Waswasa & anxiety
Seek refuge (أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ), ignore the whispers, keep dhikr, and get proper medical/psychological help when needed — that is also from tawakkul.
8. Daily protection routine
| When | What to recite |
|---|---|
| Morning (after Fajr) & evening (after ‘Asr/Maghrib) | Ayat al-Kursi; Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas ×3; “Bismillahi alladhi la yadurru ma‘a ismihi shay’un…” ×3 (Abu Dawud 5088); “A‘udhu bi-kalimatillah at-tammat…” ×3 (evening) |
| Before sleep | Ayat al-Kursi; last two verses of Al-Baqarah; blow into palms after the three Quls and wipe over the body ×3 |
| Entering the toilet | “Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika min al-khubuthi wal-khaba’ith” (Al-Bukhari 142) |
| Throughout the day | Five daily prayers on time, Quran, istighfar and “La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah…” ×100 (Al-Bukhari 3293) |
9. Protecting your home
- Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in the house — “Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Muslim 780)
- Say Bismillah when entering, eating and closing doors (Muslim 2018).
- Pray voluntary prayers at home and keep it free of music and images of living beings.
- Recite ruqyah over water and sprinkle it in the corners of rooms (practised by some scholars).
10. Mistakes to avoid
- Wearing amulets, threads or written charms — “Whoever hangs an amulet has committed shirk.” (Ahmad 17422)
- Visiting fortune-tellers or “raqis” who ask for names of mothers, personal items for “reading”, or animal blood.
- Believing the raqi, water or oil heals by itself.
- Blaming every problem on jinn, sihr or the eye, and abandoning medical care.
- Paying excessive sums to people promising guaranteed cures.
- Unsupervised ruqyah for women by non-mahram men, or any inappropriate touching.
